Movie Review : Showbiz

Though the tagline of SHOWBIZ reads “the dark side of fame’, it has actually nothing to do with fame, but everything to do with television channels hungry for a scoop. Choreographer Raju Khan makes his debut behind the camera tackling an issue which requires the sensitivity of a veteran, but what he cooks up is amateurish stuff at its best.

True, there may be channels fabricating stories to push the TRP’s to get viewer eyeballs. True, there may be some news on television we see where the tapes may have been edited before airing them. It may also be true that television is going berserk trying to keep pace with the number of channels burgeoning and wanting to stay on top of the heap, come what may. But is what SHOWBIZ sensationalizing true??? That’s a multi-million dollar question.

News is one such television station where its owner, Gulshan Grover hires some journo, who can be classified as goons. And they do just that… what goons will do… twist a story to suit their require. And they make it a point to proudly say that they are “Journalists”. But what Raju Khan fails to show is the balance between the media and the glamour earth How the media is being used by those wanting their fame and moment under the sun. It’s a two-way street but what is shown is a one-sided view. How far it’s true, I don’t know. There may be instances of fabricated stories being aired to increase TRPs but that does not denote all television stories are fabricated!!

Tushar Jalota makes his debut as Rohan Arya, a much sought after singer. The media henchmen, if I may call them so, headed by Sushant Singh (brilliant job) goes after fabricating one story after another using him (Tushar) as the prop. They even go to the extent of almost getting him killed in a car accident (sic) and to sensationalize it further, pour alcohol in his mouth while another pulls down the zipper of the blouse of the woman involved in the mishap. If this is what television journos do to earn their living, then this has to be a scoop by producer Mukesh Bhatt!!!

Mrinalini Sharma is pleasing. She has the spark. Tushar Jalota too, makes a decent first appearance.

Movie Preview JODHAA-AKBAR

JODHAA-AKBAR is the sixteenth century marathon that tells the story of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, played by Hrithik Roshan, and his Hindu wife, Jodhabai, played by Aishwarya Rai. Directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowarikar, who before directed the Oscar-nominated LAGAAN; JODHAA-AKBAR swear to be one of the most plentiful films ever shaped on celluloid.

It writes the poetry of a marriage of alliances that unintentionally gives rise to true love between a great Mughal ruler and his Rajput wife. For Emperor Akbar, political prowess had no limits. After conquering the Hindu Kush, he further imposed authority that long-drawn-out from present-day Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, and from the Himalayas to the Godavari River. But one of his smartest moves was gaining the support and loyalty of the Rajputs, one of India’s most challenging groups. In attempt to make stronger his relations with the Rajputs, Akbar decides to marry the defiant Rajput princess Jodhabai, who at the time was but a mere pawn in the political mindset of Akbar. However, it was this very bond so as to soon lit the flame of a candle made not of wax, but of true love. Akbar’s greatest obstacle now was not simply to win battles, but to woo Jodhaa and gain her love – a possession buried beneath the rubbles of hate and chauvinism.

A film that has been in the making for quite some time, JODHAA-AKBAR is a piece of work in which Ashutosh Gowarikar has invested a lot of time, dedication, and research. The film is also said to have a exceptional soundtrack, which has been calm by Gowarikar-loyal A R Rahman and written by Javed Akhtar.

Some interesting points behind the making of JODHAA-AKBAR:

A band of Rajput youths have threatened to sue Gowarikar, demanding that he prove that Akbar and Jodhabai were in fact married.  Gowarikar had hired a research team of scholars in addition to historians from New Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur and Agra to help him keep his writing as historically accurate and precise as possible.JODHAA-AKBAR is scheduled to release at the same time in 26 different countries. Over 80 elephants, 100 horses, and 55 camels have reportedly been used in the shooting of this film. The soundtrack of JODHAA-AKBAR has twelve songs by A.R Rahman.

Movie Preview: Meerabai Not Out

We love cricket. India loves the game! Cricket is the reason for our very existence. Cricketers are our Gods-our triumphant boys in blue. Our religion?-cricket! Our love?-cricket!! Our mania?-CRICKET!!!

Well that’s clear sufficient.

Pritish Nandy Communications carries you the craziest, amazing love story of the year! And the one thing it’s not about is hearts, flowers and Cupid with his bow-n-arrow! Infect, tweak it a little, take away the bow-n-arrow and put a bat in Cupid’s plump little arms and what you’ve got is MEERABAI NOT OUT!

Meera Achrekar, a mathematics teacher at Vishwaprem Vidyalaya, has been happy and single for fairly a while now. The great love of her life has been, and will always remain, cricket and Anil Kumble. The meticulous number cruncher is, despite not being the classic eye-candy-teenage-fantasy-fodder, a huge hit in class, and that’s because Meera, unlike most teachers of her school, is more fanatical about her religion-cricket-than even the school cricket captain

Living with her family in their little home in a Mumbai chawl, Meera was initiated into her temple of Wankhede Stadium by her brother, Mahesh.

Mahesh Anant Achreker played cricket at the Ranji Trophy level. Sadly, middle class making-ends-meet economics got the better of the impreessive Maharashtrian leggie, and passion had to make way for blame. Mahesh is today a cricket cynic. So while Meera bunks classes in adding to fights for season tickets to every cricket match that is played at Wankhede stadium, Mahesh steers obvious even of the cricket scores!

While the folk at Bhaktiyog Society have cast aspersions on her craze forwards the game, the bigger problem that worries the Achrekar family is Meera’s still-single status. Love suddenly blossoms with heart-specialist, Dr Arjun Sachdeva and Meera comprehends that perhaps there is more to life than praying for Team India and Anil Kumble! However, in flanked by this wonderful swap of text messages, Valentine’s Day outings and walks along Chowpatty, she confesses to Arjun that she is by now married-to cricket!!

So, while the maiden’s heart beats for Anil Kumble and India’s fortunes, the more significant question is: will Meera be able to commit to her non-striker beau and keep her potential father-in-law at bay?

This season’s most charming, reality-struck romance is here to warm your heart! Cross your fingers and implore that Meera doesn’t have to choose between love and Anil Kumble!
