Movie Review : Showbiz

Though the tagline of SHOWBIZ reads “the dark side of fame’, it has actually nothing to do with fame, but everything to do with television channels hungry for a scoop. Choreographer Raju Khan makes his debut behind the camera tackling an issue which requires the sensitivity of a veteran, but what he cooks up is amateurish stuff at its best.

True, there may be channels fabricating stories to push the TRP’s to get viewer eyeballs. True, there may be some news on television we see where the tapes may have been edited before airing them. It may also be true that television is going berserk trying to keep pace with the number of channels burgeoning and wanting to stay on top of the heap, come what may. But is what SHOWBIZ sensationalizing true??? That’s a multi-million dollar question.

News is one such television station where its owner, Gulshan Grover hires some journo, who can be classified as goons. And they do just that… what goons will do… twist a story to suit their require. And they make it a point to proudly say that they are “Journalists”. But what Raju Khan fails to show is the balance between the media and the glamour earth How the media is being used by those wanting their fame and moment under the sun. It’s a two-way street but what is shown is a one-sided view. How far it’s true, I don’t know. There may be instances of fabricated stories being aired to increase TRPs but that does not denote all television stories are fabricated!!

Tushar Jalota makes his debut as Rohan Arya, a much sought after singer. The media henchmen, if I may call them so, headed by Sushant Singh (brilliant job) goes after fabricating one story after another using him (Tushar) as the prop. They even go to the extent of almost getting him killed in a car accident (sic) and to sensationalize it further, pour alcohol in his mouth while another pulls down the zipper of the blouse of the woman involved in the mishap. If this is what television journos do to earn their living, then this has to be a scoop by producer Mukesh Bhatt!!!

Mrinalini Sharma is pleasing. She has the spark. Tushar Jalota too, makes a decent first appearance.

Since almost a decade, Priyadarshan has been specializing in comic capers. Priyan has tickled the funny bone of viewers time and again and in Dhol, the comic scenes override the thrill quotient. The comedy, like always, is targeted next to those who appreciate the Priyan brand of humor — irrational, but funny. The chemistry between the four pivotal characters is tremendous, especially Rajpal Yadav, who’s bound to walk away by means of ceetees and taalis.

Let’s look next to the other side of the coin! The gangster portions remind one of the 1980s cinema, which has been beaten to death in film after film. These portions are an aberration and the accomplished director be supposed to orderly them by at least 20 minutes so that the impact created by the comedy track remains intact, not getting diluted in the process.

Dhol revolves in the region of the lives of four friends — Sam [Tusshar Kapoor], Pakkya [Sharman Joshi], Maru [Rajpal Yadav] and Goti [Kunal Khemu]. The guys are good for nothing with no motivation. But they’re bound together by their child-like notoriety and aimlessness.

They all want to make it big in life with the least efforts possible. The four wish to live life on their own terms, leading everyone on the way to nowhere. As a result, each one tries their hand at finding a short cut to success but ends up being in even deeper trouble instead. Things get worse as the four decide to take some desperate measures to ethemisery once and for all. According to them, the only way to get rich without working hard is to get married to a rich girl. astonishingly, to unlock their fates arrives the rich girl Kanchan [Tanushree Dutta] in their neighborhood. All four set out with their individual plans to marry Kanchan, but end up discovering a chilling truth.

Inspired by PARDA HAI PARDA, which in turn was a remake of the Malayalam film HARIHAR NAGAR, Dhol has the by-now-famous Priyan stamp on the comic portions. Come to think of it, you expect laughter in generous doses and Dhol doesn’t disappoint on that front.

Dhol has several funny moments, but most importantly, they make you laugh as well. The loan sequence at the create [when the four avail of a loan from Tiku Talsania in exchange of gold jewelry], followed by the four pushing Om Puri’s car till it falls off a cliff, plus the four spraying water with hose pipes to douse the fire [really, a havan is taking place inside the mansion] and Murli Sharma enquiring about the Dhol from the four are sequences that bring the house down.

On the flip side, the flashback is a big yawn. Plus, Murli Sharma cornering Tanushree and Payal Rohatgi in the house is monotonous and only adds to the length. Looks like the editor forgot to use the scissors in those scenes.

Pritam’s music is functional. ‘Dhol Bajake’ is a decent number, while the remaining songs are ordinary. Piyush Shah’s film making is of standard. Dialogues are funny at times.

The four actors compliment each other very well. But the one who steals the show is Rajpal Yadav, who, with his dumbness, endears himself to the masses completely. He’s brilliant! However, that doesn’t mean the others are less impressive. Sharman Joshi has always had a great timing for comedy and he proves it yet again in Dhol.

Tusshar looks fresh and gets into the skin of the character skillfully. Kunal Khemu’s role is in sharp dissimilarity to his first two films [KALYUG, TRAFFIC SIGNAL] and he proves his versatility by attempting comedy now. Tanushree Dutta’s role doesn’t have the meat since Dhol is an all-boys show. Nonetheless, she’s satisfactory. Payal Rohatgi has a brief role; she’s passable.

Om Puri is efficient. Tiku Talsania and Asrani have their moments. Rasika Joshi is in form yet again. She’s too good! Farida Dadi [grandmother] does a fine job. Arbaaz Khan is fair. Murli Sharma is good.

On the whole, Dhol is a decent entertainer that has some really funny comic moments. At the box-office, the Priyadarshan brand should ensure impressive footfalls at cineplexes despite the dull period and coupled with its moderate pricing, Dhol should find a place in the director’s successful films.

Suspence Movie -Raaz

Film: Raaz
Starring: Bipasha Basu, Dino Moreo, Malini Sharma and Ashutosh Rana
Director: Bhatt Brothers
Music: Nadeem-Shravan
Rating: 3/5 (Good)

It has been a long time since we had a good Horror flick made in Bollywood. Taking inspiration from movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer, What Lies Beneath and Hitchcock movie, this movie turns out to be one of the better-made movies of 2002.

Mahesh Bhatt who is credited with the unique distinction of working with the maximum number of new comers whether actors, music-directors, songwriters gets the best out of Dino and Bipasha.

Not at all confusing as the movie revolves with few characters, the continuity of the movie is brilliant to keep you gripping throughout the movie.

The story is about a young troubled couple Sanjana Dhanraj (Bipasha Basu) and Aditya Dhanraj (Dino Morea). The couple is almost on the verge of a divorce when they decide to take time out and spend more time with each other in their Ooty bungalow. Ooty, however turns to be a nightmare for Sanajana as she can feel a spirit calling her and later she even sees the spirit’s face. Aditya does not believe her, but her friend based in Ooty does, who introduces her to Prof. Agni Swaroop who is a Professor of supernatural sciences, who also unconditionally believes in spirits. He is passionate towards exploring truth beyond science.

The rest is to be seen in the film. The ambience for creating horror has been aptly created to make the movie interesting. Some of the scenes are shot amazingly while there are few ones which have the audience in splits.

Bipasha rocks in this movie, brilliant acting – she manages her role very well. Dino too is good while Ashutosh once again gives a splendid performance.

Malini Sharma the girl from the “Kya Soorat Hai” video too is impressive. She will be interesting to watch for in the future.

The music score done by Raju Rao of this movie is intelligent. Some songs are great while other songs in this movie are average, nothing that you will hum after you are out of the movie hall except for two or three tracks.

Overall a nice flick and enjoyable viewing.
